The Lynnwood City Council will consider ordinances Monday night to tidy up neighborhoods.

The Daily Herald of Everett reports the ordinances would regulate how tall grass could grow on lawns, whether semi- trucks can park on neighborhood streets, and if mother-in- law apartments can be built separate from homes.

The community development director, Paul Krauss, says the purpose of the grass ordinance is to go after homes where there has been little maintenance for years. Overgrown yards become breeding grounds for pests and could catch fire in the summer.

The city says officers won't be out with rulers checking the laws, rather the idea is to make homeowners who never do maintenance clean up the neighborhood eyesore.

"You should be able to tell your neighbor. They don't need to spend money on the lawn police," said one neighbor.

    freedom in lynnwood
Grass may be between one and three quarters and two and seven eights inches vertical above substrate soil. Grass must be cut weekly, with rotary clipping mower, no single blade mowers permitted. The clipper is less stressful on the grass, and if allowed to grow more than one week between clippings the grass begins to develop personality and must be allowed to actualize itself. Further, use of gasoline powered mowers is prohibited, alcohol fuel is allowable, but electric power is preferred, and will be required at a later date. Grass clippings must be raked up and removed, no mulching into the lawn is permitted, it too closely resembles cannibalism and is offensive to the living grass. Dandelions that develop heads must be allowed to seed, and may not be removed from their native location. A fine for such seeding will be enforced, if the gross vertical length (height) of the dandelion exceeds the permitted surrounding lawn vertical length (height). This synopsis is not a complete explication of the regulations pertaining to grass and related non shrubberiferous living beings commonly found around residential and commercial properties. Do we spend enough of our money on government?

    Too much
Lynnwood has to many employees and maybe should dump about half of what they have to reduce taxes so people would be able to take care of their property. They would rather drive out business and have more government employees then work with them. I have been around here for a long time and remember when the police department was in a house by the former jr. high school and think the city has grown to much. The new convention center is an eye sore by the way and should covered up.

    Too many city employees
Agree with Swan - this story just screams that Lynnwood has too many employees trying to justify jobs. Get rid if the paper pushers, traffic cameras and cut the expenses for those that pay.

    Wait until it's your neighbor
It's all fun and games until you live next to a house with a lawn that is NEVER mowed and you watch the rats come out and walk across your deck. The city is responding to citizen feedback - where were any of you when the City held meetings and asked the public for input on this?

You get a yard with 3 feet of dead, dry grass in it and it's like an instant bonfire waiting to happen. (and it will get neighbor houses too) Now if the ordinances are too anal that's one thing, but anyone that lets their lawn get over 6" shouldn't live in a place with a yard.

    GRASS POLICE
Gives the phrase a whole new meaning. When long grass is outlawed only outlaws will have long grass. SNL; eat your hearts out.

    And what, jail them?
Our lawn is tall right now. The lawnmower is broken and my husband is unemployed. Thank goodness we don't live in Lynnwood or we might be criminals! Will they be issuing fines to people like us, that couldn't afford to pay them right now, and couldn't afford to comply with the law at the moment? What about people who aren't physically able to keep up their lawns? What about people who simply don't happen to think lawns are a good use of time, energy, water, and other resources? Nobody can even *see* our lawn. If we lived in Lynnwood and someone (say the Jehovah's Witnesses or the UPS guy) reported us for having a non-compliant lawn, would we still get in trouble with the law? If Lynnwood wants to pass stupid laws that infringe on people's rights like this, they need to provide alternatives. If they don't like the way people maintain their lawns, they need to provide a free lawnmowing service. If they don't like it when people or their families park semi-trucks near their homes, they need to provide nearby semi-parking. And regulating mother-in-law apartments? What in the world could be the purpose of that? You can build a shed, but if you put a bathroom in it it's illegal. Give me a break. What if your mother-in-law is the one that could mow your lawn???
